I have been there and I would plan on at least two to three hours to tour the place. Actually, you could spend the day and night there, because it is totally fascinating and a great opportunity to see artistic objects one doesn't get to see every day. At least, that's what it was for me. I was totally enthralled!

If you have time, go to the TKTS booth in Times Square and get some discount tickets to a Broadway show. Or go to Radio City Music Hall and catch the Christmas Spectacular, see the tree in the Plaza, go to the Top of the Rock. Or just walk down 5th Avenue where they traditionally have incredible Christmas displays. Then there are a lot of museums on Museum Mile. Each is different and some are one of a kind. An inexpensive ride is the Roosevelt Island Tram which is near the Queensboro Bridge in Manhattan. The view is spectacular.

Metropolitan museum of art?

Right, i visited New York recently; and made a trip to the metropolitan museum of art: in the modern art section, there was a picture, and i would like to know the name of it..

it's a painting; about half of it is filled with something that looks like a drawing of a beach, or the moon or something; the other half is a part of someones face, only the eyes and eyebrows though. The two are seperated by a scroll thing.
Any suggestions or information would be helpful!

MASON, LULU AND RAFTWET

The art community in Second Life is a varied one. Fine art, outsider art, underground art, performance art and music are all mixed in with the technical aspects of programming and scripting.

Second Life is one of the first places to combine right and left brain thinkers into one fantastic execution of art and builds in a virtual reality.

The sophistication of the artist is apparent at several places on the SL grid. There are many places that rival my favorites, but these are my personal choices based on my reaction or how long it stayed with me.

The Apollo sim will always be my very favorite place, but here are two that just captured my head and heart. La Reve and pteron are included on my "to die for" list and of course, The A List!

Both are fantastic. Both are fabulously done with a flair that most of us who build, will never achieve. I also included a few stand-outs from Esperance, Nebulous's ArtHole installation, and also, the conceptual Muzik Haus.

Muzik Haus is included, not because of the build itself. That part is simple, but the concept itself is one that stays with me. Mr Widget is the dj and his party making mash-ups create a total ambiance that drives the performance itself.

He is my current favorite dj. He is a mash-up king. And he shares his knowledge with us so generously.

All these places and all these people... standing before you and your art, sometimes overwhelms me to a point of tears. The emotional connection I feel when I explore or listen is the reason why I believe that art equals life. For without art... life is a dreary place and that is no life for anyone.

What is the significance of the skeleton in Mexican folk art?

Artie answers:

A common misconception in the United States is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day; Mexico's Independence Day is September 16 (dieciséis de septiembre in Spanish).

About skeletons in Mexican folk art:

It represents the dead. The Spanish in Mexico incorporated parts of the indigenous belief system into Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This is celebrated every year on All Hallow's Eve (Halloween), and All Soul's Eve; October 31st and November 1st, respectivly.

More than 500 years ago, when the Spanish Conquistadors landed in what is now Mexico, they encountered natives practicing a ritual that seemed to mock death.

It was a ritual the indigenous people had been practicing at least 3,000 years. A ritual the Spaniards would try unsuccessfully to eradicate.

A ritual known today as Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. The ritual is celebrated in Mexico and certain parts of the United States, including the Valley.

Celebrations are held each year in Mesa, Chandler, Guadalupe and at Arizona State University. Although the ritual has since been merged with Catholic theology, it still maintains the basic principles of the Aztec ritual, such as the use of skulls.

Today, people don wooden skull masks called calacas and dance in honor of their deceased relatives. The wooden skulls are also placed on altars that are dedicated to the dead. Sugar skulls, made with the names of the dead person on the forehead, are eaten by a relative or friend, according to Mary J. Adrade, who has written three books on the ritual.

The Aztecs and other Meso-American civilizations kept skulls as trophies and displayed them during the ritual. The skulls were used to symbolize death and rebirth.

The skulls were used to honor the dead, whom the Aztecs and other Meso-American civilizations believed came back to visit during the monthlong ritual.

Unlike the Spaniards, who viewed death as the end of life, the natives viewed it as the continuation of life. Instead of fearing death, they embraced it. To them, life was a dream and only in death did they become truly awake.

"The pre-Hispanic people honored duality as being dynamic," said Christina Gonzalez, senior lecturer on Hispanic issues at Arizona State University. "They didn't separate death from pain, wealth from poverty like they did in Western cultures."

However, the Spaniards considered the ritual to be sacrilegious. They perceived the indigenous people to be barbaric and pagan.

In their attempts to convert them to Catholicism, the Spaniards tried to kill the ritual.

But like the old Aztec spirits, the ritual refused to die.

To make the ritual more Christian, the Spaniards moved it so it coincided with All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day (Nov. 1 and 2), which is when it is celebrated today.

Previously it fell on the ninth month of the Aztec Solar Calendar, approximately the beginning of August, and was celebrated for the entire month. Festivities were presided over by the goddess Mictecacihuatl. The goddess, known as "Lady of the Dead," was believed to have died at birth, Andrade said.

Today, Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico and in certain parts of the United States and Central America.

Good question.

Saskatchewan has an African Heritage museum.

And I just found this site...http://www3.museumofmaking.org/dbtw-wpd/machine.htm which details their historic African collection. They are in Calgary.

The Museum of Civilization (Ottawa/Hull) has had special collections on display about African heritage but I don't recall a large amount in their permanent collection. There is likely some there, though.

UBC's Museum of Anthropology has 2800 pieces in their collection and the ROM has a whole 'Galleries of Africa' display, which includes Egypt.

Are you fed up with "officials" deciding what's important? Do you wish that history wasn't just written by the winners?

The losers, the outsiders, the real people have history too. It deserves recognition, YOUR history deserves a blue plaque.

So now it can have one, the Campaign for Real Heritage will place a plaque anywhere, commemorating any event you like. Just get a sticker, fill in the gap, and stick (with permission, obviously).

More info here. They come in ones, tens and fifties — depends how much history you wish to create.

When you've made history, have a ceremony, take a photo. Place it here.

I just dealt with this problem in my Golden Retrieve a few weeks ago. My mom and I went to Petco and found some pain medication meant for dogs. I just ran downstairs and found out it is called Nutri-Vet K9 Asprin. It worked really well with my Golden. She was unable to get up due to her hips but we gave it to her before bed and by the next morning she was fine. I highly recommend getting medication meant for dogs, not humas.

Artie answers:

Arthritis is wear and tare on the joints, almost anyone can suffer with it to some degree.
But Rheumatoid Arthritis is Hereditary usually more women than men are affected by it and it also affects other organs in the body.....its not just wear and tare, the body actually starts to attack itself, the bones kinda become diseased and they crumble or get eaten away at plus you also get deposits on bone surface that cause disfigurement.

What's the best way to alleviate arthritis symptoms in dogs?

My 10 yr old yellow lab was just diagnosed with arthritis. She's absolutely fine, most of the time, runs, swims, etc. But, she has days, when she can not put any weight on her right front paw. The Vet gave me medacam, and that works very well. But is there anything else I can do for her?
She is at her normal weight, about 62 pounds, she is definitely not over-weight. She swims in the pool daily (usually several times, even when the leg acts up). I do give her glucosamine supplements (in honey). I'm interested in the magnetic therapy, do they make small mattress pads for dog beds?
She;s definitely not overweight, and I dont think she did anything to the paw, because it hurt initially, but then was absolutely fine for about a month, and then back to holding it in the air. I was really beginning to think the arthritis diagnosis was not right, until she started limping on it again...I'm not that familiar with arthritis, is that how it is, comes and goes?

If I understood right you suffer from pain in your joints but your doctor does not find any pathologic signs during clinical examination nor any laboratory discrepancies. If that's the case I would ask for an ultrasound examination of the affected joints. This way you will see if there's arthritis, tenosynovitis or some other pathology in the region, above that you can quantify the degree of inflammation (if any). Let us know what happened!

Humans reek havoc on the earth. We use up her resources and take Her for granted. Mother Earth would be happy and could restore herself if we were extinct. Maybe you could have Atlas who held the world on his shoulders, faltering and crumbling beneath the weight of the destruction. And he could have the face and/or feet of t-rex.
It's pretty interesting that you are an advanced artist. I'm an advanced artist, too (with a lot of experience). I began to draw real humans when I was 13 years old. However, I'm a lot better in drawing fan art and anthro pictures.

Anyone own a trendy exclusive restaurant who knows how I can promote artwork in such places?

I've got some paintings to sell, I think they'd look good on the wall of a contemporary restaurant. I need to know if anyone can give me advice on how to lend the paintings to such a restaurant/bistro with a view to promoting the works and the artist.
I think it could be win-win for the restuarant as they can benefit from free artwork which would usually cost thousands of pounds. If they sell I can arrange for more works to be shipped from the artist's homeland (Ecuador). Therefore they would also potentially have good variety along a common theme. I currently have eight pieces - they are the only original works by the artist in the UK - I have the certificates of authenticity from the Art Council of Ecuador to prove they are genuine.
Style is tribal/ethnic for want of a better description - vibrant, bold and earthy with a slightly abstract "dream - like" quality to them.
Any advice/offers much appreciated!

Restaurant is very serious business and they take lot of pains to create the ambiance, which also forms the part of their value proposition. Most restaurants create the look and feel of their restaurant with the help of professional designers. So your best bet is to get in touch with architects and interior designers who specialise in Hotels and restaurant designs and take your idea forward. They have professional bodies/associations who can help you with addresses.

Artie answers:

His name is Martin Ramirez, his strange and twisted life story can be summarized as follows:
A young Mexican man comes to the United States in 1925 to find work. Years later, the Great Depression hits, he winds up on the street, and he gets picked up the cops. He is thrown into a nuthouse in California, where he lives for the rest of his life. Over the course of his 32 years in a mental institution, he creates some of the most stunning artwork of the era. With no formal training, and often, without any art supplies beyond stray objects that he found in the building, he creates mesmerizing images that address immigration, poverty, and insanity. He has public exhibitions of his work, and critics hail him as brilliant. Yet his schizophrenia is so severe that he rarely speaks to anyone, and he never comprehends that his pictures have provoked such adoration in the outside world. He dies, still insane as f***, in 1963 at the age of 68.

If he had been a crazy Brit or a mad German, would his treatment in America have been the same? Might his genius be better recognized and nurtured today, rather than shut off in a padded cell? And what of our social services that took care of an immigrant instead of chucking him back across the border? How would that work in the current political climate?

These are all valid questions, but all I can offer in this post is a gateway to his art. Looking at his work makes you feel like you’re taking a warped train ride (one of his favorite reoccurring motifs) through a tortured imagination, destination unknown or even irrelevant. If you get a chance, check out a Ramirez exhibition, and let the Fanatic know what you think of it.

The Mexican Revolution was in 1910 so the artists of the 17 & 1800's wouldn't have had much to paint.
Diego Rivera was born in 1886 and is probably the main artist of the period.

Various reviews online will help -- I've given you two below, and you should be capable of finding others -- but you really need to obtain the exhibition literature. The obvious course is to contact the museum. See the third site, below:
