What language would be easier? Japanese or Italian?

I'm attending University of Nebraska at Omaha and considering taking a foreign language course.
I'm majoring in History and currently working for a Bachelors of Science, which requires no foreign language. My advisors are telling me that i need to consider a Bachelors of Art, which requires 4 semesters of a foreign language cause it looks MUCH better if and when i apply for graduate school.
Their advice is sinking in and I’m considering starting on a foreign language. I took French I when i was a freshman, but after a 3 year break from school, i forgot everything and would have to start all over again. I struggled with all the grammar rules of the language, but found speaking it and learning the basic words was fairly easy. My advisors told me i should consider a language, in which that culture interest me cause that would help me stay focused learning the language and it will be greatly beneficial when I start learn a certain area in history down the road (Japanese history or Greek history.)
I'm very interested in the Greek and Japanese culture, but my college doesn't offer Greek, but does offer Italian (which i heard is very closely related to Greek since it's a romance language, but so is French, so I’m worried about all the grammar rules.) I also heard the Japanese has very few grammar rules, but worried about learning Kanji or whatever form they teach in basic language courses.
I tried to goggle my answer and got equally mixed views on how Japanese is easier than Italian and vice versa. So... What language would be the easiest to learn, Japanese or Italian??
I have no want to take spanish as i'm not planning on studying their history. As a history major i'll have my head buried in books and writtings and such. I see how spanish could be the best answer for someone in business or some sort of community service, but for a historian not even interested in spanish history??
ok, i get it. greek is not a romance language. i was wrong. please stop telling me greek isn't a romace language as part or ur answer cause thats not what i was asking. ty =)

Artie answers:

As others have mentioned, Greek is not a romance language. Japanese actually has a decent amount of grammatical rules. (Chinese has less grammatical rules than Japanese. For example, the conjugation of verbs in Chinese is not the same as a European language. Chinese does not express these differences through inflectional suffixes.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_grammar

Kanji can be difficult in the first few years of learning Japanese. However, most Japanese speakers would agree that kanji actually makes learning the language much easier as you advance.

What type of history do you plan on specializing in? If you want a career as a Japanese historian, learn Japanese. Eventually, your Japanese would have to become fluent in order to conduct research. This would require much devotion.

Additionally, French and German are highly recommended for history majors who plan to go to graduate school. In fact, many graduate history programmes state a good knowledge in French/German as one of their admissions requirements.

how many AP tests should i take in order to apply for an ivy leage school?

Im currently a freshman, and I wonder how many AP courses and tests should I take if I'd like to apply for an ivy leage school? I know I should take as many as I can, but the problem is that my school offers 19 AP courses, and Im not gotta take 5 of them for sure (language and 2 useless courses according to my preference of major). Additionally, I came from china last year, so it would be super hard for me to earn an A in AP english. Im thinking about not to take AP eng. at all, but does it actually look better when I have an A for college prep english class instead of a B in AP eng.?

Anyway here's my plan for next 3 yrs:
10th grade: AP biology & AP computer science (already the maximum amt)
11th grade: AP calculus AB, AP USH, AP physics B or C
12th grade: AP statistics, AP comparative govt & politics in 1st semester & AP U.S. govt & politics in 2nd, AP chemistry, AP japanese, AP art history (if i dont make yearbook or my school newspaper or anything like that)

So the total would be 10 or 11 out of 15 (not including the language classes that i wont be able to take), I'm not sure if it's enough since my school has 19 AP courses. Im interested in economics and phychology, so Im planning to take AP test for macroeconomics & microeconomics next year, and psychology in junior year. Would you suggest me to study by myself or find a tutor or sign up for the class somewhere? Do you think that it's the best way to make my app stronger? I wanna do this simply bacause I wont have credit for AP english.

Besides, if you have any suggestion for my choice of world language, I would seriously think abt it. Im gotta take SAT for Chinese this year to fulfill my high school's language requirement, and I'll do Japanese probably (or spanish). Does it matter that I didnt take any language class in 1st yr? I heard that ivy leage school ask you for the credit of language for 4 yrs. I hope that a high score for SAT Chinese would be useful.

Thanks for your help. I wrote a lot because I have no idea abt those stuff. Thank you for reading it again.

Artie answers:

The AP classes that you are planning to take seem sufficient. I think that you should take AP English, if you can at least get a high B in it, at my school the AP English class us so much different than the regular class that even a C in AP is better than an A in CP. You should keep in mind that a lot of Ivy schools don't except AP credits, but the tests may help your application as long as you get a 4 or 5. I would suggest getting a tutor, but not for all of the classes, just the harder ones. You should also look into other SAT subject tests, as at least 3 of these are required for Ivy schools. In most cases only 3 years of language would not look very good, but because I'm assuming that you are fluent in Chinese, and obviously your English is quite good 3 years of Japanese or Spanish will be fine. I would Suggest Spanish, because it is the second most widely spoken language in the US, but if you think you will do better in Japanese than take that. Make sure that you keep you grades up, but your grades aren't everything. Keep in mind that if there are 2 identical applications, but one had some extracurricular activities and the other did not, the person with the extracurricular activities will have a better chance of getting in. Be sure you relax, and don't stretch yourself to thin, you seem very smart. I hope I helped you out.

Two different majors to pick?

So... I know for sure I want to do Computer Science.... but I seriously would like to pair it with a Humanities type of minor....
Although I would like to come out of college with a good-paying job... in the long run, money isn't THAT important with me. Or... I at least don't plan to become rich one day. Just to have a job loving what I do. Which is why I'm considering to take a humanities type of minor... but the question is, will I still be able to even get a job with a minor like that?

These are the minors I'm considering.

Minors that would go well with CS:
Business
Mathematics
Accounting
Finance
Engineering (Computer, Mechanical, Civil, Environmental, etc.)

Minors that doesn't entirely relate with CS:
Art (Illustration, Drawing, Animation/Graphics)
Art History
Studio Arts
Japanese
French
German
Philosophy
Visual Communications
Animal Science/Zoology
Humanities - General

Which would be a better choice? To choose a minor directly related with CS to show I'm more concentrated with the field of material or to choose a minor that's not really related but can show that I'm a more well-rounded person? Thoughts?
@PE2008: Oh, wow. Yeah, I knew that. xD
I forgot to specify that if I would've picked Engineering then I would have minored in CS. That's my fault.

Want to major in Japanese but need advice?

I am currently enrolled in a community college and have one more class to take this fall before I can graduate with an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences.

I have been trying to figure out what I want to do and have recently researched the Japanese major. It sounds like something I would really be interested in because I would be learning Japanese history as well as the Japanese language.

Now, that being said I don't want to have to go through other courses, specifically mathematics. I just want to go straight into Japanese courses. This means I would probably want to find a school that doesn't require the SAT or ACT tests to be accepted. Is this possible?

Also, any recommendations for schools would be great. I am in the United States and can go to any 50 states including Hawaii. I would like a school that provides the ability for students to go to Japan to study for at least a few months.

Also, my third question, about how long (years) on average does it take to complete the Japanese major? (As in, become officially fluent and recognized as a translator, if that's what I decide I want to be).

Thank you in advance!
Thank you for the answers so far! I would like to add that I may want to pair the Japanese major with a minor in creative writing or something art related.

Artie answers:

More than likely every school will have graduation requirements, one of which will likely be mathematics. I had to take a math class. It sucked, but I survived. You're also going to have to take more than just classes related strictly to Japanese language, culture, history, or literature.

If a school has a Japanese BA, I guarantee it has a study abroad office and more than likely has some parter programs with Japanese universities. Just to name one, my university is CU Boulder. We have three programs you can choose from for study abroad through Sophia University, Kansai Gaidai, or Akita International University. This fall I am off to Akita for the year. All these schools guarantee credit and you will earn in-resident (rather than transfer) credit from their classes.

You will not become fluent from college classes alone. If you have never taken Japanese before then it would take you at least three full years to complete all the language classes simply because you have to take them in order. One semester of 101, one semester of 102, one semester of 201, et cetera and so on. Having a BA in Japanese also does not qualify you as a translator. To be a translator you need to have more inherent skill than anything else, especially for Japanese. They don't care if you have a certain degree or a certain JLPT level so much as they have seen examples of your work and know you're good. The translation business is almost entirely freelance, driven by word-of-mouth and good relations between a person and a certain business. Most translators do not just get by solely on translation work (especially if it's for literature and not a better niche market like translating instruction manuals for DVD players), and if your only degree is with Japanese then you will find the job market very, very, very difficult. You really need to pair a language degree with something more lucrative, such as business or education.

Honey, I doubt if anyone in the History section of Arts & Humanities is willing to do your homework for you.

Instead, I recommend you re-post your extensive homework questions in the Homework Help section of Education & Reference.

On a related note: You do know that your local public library and information found for you by a reference/information librarian is only a phone call away, don't you? Also, most public libraries in the US have an electronic question/answer service, often called Ask A Librarian, available as a link usually from the library home page. Using either method would get you your answer a lot faster.

I think we can all agree that the majority of stuff they play on the radio today isn't country.
Artie answers:

It helped modern day artists because it merged arts and crafts. An art and a craft art two very separate things. A piece of art is something that is created for the sole purpose of being viewed and contemplated. A craft is something that is created with a basis in function. Being separate, art is to be seen/thought and craft is to be used. The arts and crafts movement infused the two. Crafts can now be about function and concept...as art can be about concept and function.

There is the International Arthurian Society.

For the British branch see http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~iasbb/contact.htm. For the North American branch see http://faculty.smu.edu/arthuriana/iasnab.pdf .

They produce a journal known as Arthuriana and sponsor conferences. See http://faculty.smu.edu/arthuriana/ ,

They also run a web group called Arthurnet. See http://www.clas.ufl.edu/users/jshoaf/Arthurnet.htm . You do not have to be a member of the International Arthurian Society to subscribe to this group.

There is also the web group alt.legend.king-arthur. See http://groups.google.ca/group/alt.legend.king-arthur/topics?lnk=srg&hl=en . This now seems rather moribund.

There are various Yahoo! Groups that discuss Arthur.

Artie answers:

There is no comparison the legend per se. The thing is that Arthur does resemble Jesus in some ways. People analysing heroic myths say that both King Arthur and Jesus can be considered heroes, just like Theseus or Jason in the ancient world, because of a series of distinctive traits.

In particular, the versions we have of the legend - which were surely written down much later - strongly define Arthur as a 'saviour' figure, the only one who can save his people.

The fact is that this is is a Celtic legend written down centuries later by Catholic monks. That's why you have stuff like the Holy Grail, which supposedly contained the blood of Christ and was very fashionable in the Middle Ages, alongside with the Sword in the lake and the Lady of the lake, which are clearly of pagan origin.

6 classes seem overwhelming to me, especially if this is your first semester of college. The classes you are taking are not supposed to be "hard", but taking that many classes can be tough. Do you work part-time?Are you a member of any club that requires meetings? If you don't have many other things to do, then you could probably still achieve good grades. My suggestion is start out with low amount of credits and gradually build up the difficulty. I suggest to never take more than 16-17 credits per semester.

Artie answers:

You can probably handle this course load if:
1) You don't have a lot of other things going on.
2) You are not a procrastinator.

When I was attending community college I took 12-14 credits at a time while being a full-time parent (my husband was deployed at the time), and I would have had a hard time maintaining my 4.0 GPA if I had tried to do any more. If you don't have a full-time job, parental, or other major responsibilities or are satisfied with average grades you should be fine. If you are a procrastinator though, you might struggle because inevitably there will be weeks where you have 2 major tests, 3 essays, and 1 major research paper due in different classes. As long as you have good time management skills and don't wait until the last minute to study and do assignments this won't be an issue. Look at it this way...if it's too much, you only have to struggle and be stressed out for a semester because you will know to lighten the load for the next one. Good luck!
