Your Questions About Street Art

Mary asks…

What 20th century art style would graffiti/street art be most related to?

I'm going to visit a graffiti art exhibition in a couple of days and write a review for my class, but before I go I was wondering what particular 20th century style(s) graffiti would be related to? Thanks for your help.

Artie answers:

Pop Art.

Both thematically and stylistically.

Pop Art uses contemporary inspiration for subject matter and so does graffiti. Both styles use bold, primary colors and rely on linearity. Neither is interested in shading, using flat fields of color to fill in objects. Pop Art occasionally used words in its depictions; graffiti almost always uses words or symbols.

The meaning of the art in both cases is always simple to discern and interpret.

Lizzie asks…

Street Art - What is a good large portable surface for painting on?

I'm a street artist and I want to essentially buy a personal wall for spraying on. The only thing is that I want this wall to be pretty big (I want to make car-sized paintings of cars, for example) while still being relatively light-weight and affordable. What material will satisfy my need?

Artie answers:

Maybe try ply wood. My brother likes graffiti art so he has some ply wood n he does one picture leaves it for a whil the he paints it over with white and starts a new picture.

Anyone ever seen a how to draw 3d street art book?

Anyone ever seen a how to draw 3d street art book?

Artie answers:

Oh sure. Streets and landscapes are perspective problems and there are a lot of perspective books and websites out there. Also web sites. If you are serious you will find that the information is so accessible you may find you will learn more from drawing than from a how-to-draw book.

Sandy asks…

Is there a type of urban street art where people use glue to attach art to walls like graffiti?

I've seen videos.
First, They paint a clear liquid onto the wall(glue I assume)
Second, they take a pre-cut black and white cut out of a person or "there subject" and put it on top of the glue.
Lastly, they put another coat of liquid/glue over top of that.(Maybe to seal it?)
Anyone know what this type of art is? Or how it works?

Artie answers:

Wheat paste is indeed what you need.

There are loads of different ways to make similar pastes, for example you could use wallpaper paste (get from any hardware store).

More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheatpaste

Make sure you check out the super amazing website http://www.woostercollective.com/

Basic instructions:

Mix together your paste (use a recipe - but basically wallpaper mix and water)

Draw/design or have printed some kind of design on paper

Paste the wall a bit

Stick the picture on

Paste over it a bit

Don't go to heavy on the paste, and make sure you choose a CLEAN non-porus surface to do it on.

Hope this helps. Peace
