Lisa asks…

Can you get arrested for doing street art?

I was looking to get into street art , i know that theres legal walls that you need a permit, but its too much of a hassle so I would like to know the risk of getting into street art. I'm not gonna be posting my name all over the place i would like to post up some characters i made, So can i get arrested?

Artie answers:

If it is not your property or not an authorized area, it will not be considered street art, it will be considered vandalism.

Yes, you can be arrested. You can be fined/jailed and you can be ordered to pay the costs to clean up the damage.

John asks…

Can you use sharpie pens for graffiti/street art?

I've been wanting to do street art and would like to know if i could use Sharpie permanent markers for this. Also would there be any better pens as an addition to the answer as i don't want to do any stencil or spray art.

Artie answers:

Only on a smooth surface like plastic! But yes Sharpie markers can work well and come in many colours. Perhaps try a thicker pen if you want to work larger?
These would obviously not work well on brick, as it's not smooth enough.

And do remember street graffiti is counted as vandalism and is against the law unless it is stated to be allowed in the area you choose.

Sharon asks…

Visual aid and attention grabber on street art speech. Any ideas?

I need an attention grabber and visual aid for my speech on street art and my argument is street art is a form of art.
Should I make something for my visual aid? And what should I do for my attention grabber? Please help!

Artie answers:

You could use an overhead projector to show some really good graffiti. Talk about the controversy of is it good art or bad art, or even is it art. It is art when done by a talented artist/drawer/painter. When just slobbing words and "tags" (I use that word tag, loosely because if they are not talented and just throw out a name, that's not really a tag in the true sense of the word) on a wall or over some good graffiti it is not art. Look at the sites I've included and you'll see some very talented artists. There are some good outlets for good graffiti art too: exhibitions, community walls (with permission), sketch books, published books, group or solo exhibitions. There ARE laws though to protect people's property and they consist of being arrested, having a record, possible jail, and cleanup of the site vandalized.

Last, the laws surrounding graffiti in NY city (and every other place in the USA) are stiff. Http://www.nyc.gov/html/nograffiti/html/legislation.html - 'Hope you do well.

Steven asks…

does anyone know any history about street art within camden?

i am doing a research project for my art & design course i was wondering if anyone has any extra help or information they have about street art within Camden (London) .
any help much appreciated.

Artie answers:

Street art ? Like sidewalk chalk drawings or spray paint art or performances or sculptures ?

Or all the above ?

You might try the first link below and find out if there is a walking tour guide for Camden area. They probably know a lot about the art that is on company buildings, murals, and sculptures.

If you are mainly looking for sculptures, the second link shows public art.

If you are mainly looking for outdoor dance shows, then call Tel: +44 (0)20 7121 1000. The Place is putting on some outdoor shows in a few parks in October and if you talk to them, they might know some history of their past shows.

I looked for chalk artists coming to Camden, but did not find any to talk to. But you might be able to email some famous chalk artists and see if they ever went to Camden.

I looked for spray paint artists, but their work is covered over a lot. I saw a movie about graffiti art last year, but not sure if the London scenes were in Camden or not. The wikipedia graffiti article has a section on art. That link is below.

Good luck!
