Your Questions About Modern Art Notes

Mary asks…
Socialism.. Misunderstood, misinterpreted,.. inaccurately maligned by Hitler like Nationalists ?
One of the things that always strikes me as odd.. is the association of Hitler and socialism. To be fair.. he called his party the National Socialist Workers party...
sounds pretty left , right ?
However just a quick google and you find that in fact..
it was the Social Democrats that resisted Hitler, along with the communists and were as quickly stamped out.
read this link and tell me who Hitler sounds like.
http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/article.php?lang=en&ModuleId=10005208
and
http://atheism.about.com/b/2006/10/10/opposition-to-liberalism-secularism-immorality-hitlers-appeal-to-christians-book-notes-betrayal.htm
and this quote,
"Hitler attracted Christians by criticizing the liberalism of democratic government and by advocating a tougher, law-and-order approach to German criminals. He opposed pornography, prostitution, abortion, homosexuality, and the “obscenity” of modern art, and he awarded bronze, silver, and gold medals to women who produced four, six, and eight children"
so with this in mind.. google "Democratic Socialism"
are we still fighting the Reich types? ...
I didn't ignore the USSR .. there is only so much space here.. but if you would like me to debate that I would be glad to.. Stalin, Like Hitler, Like Mussolini Like Franco.. Like "W" ..All feign a knod to the working class (socialist pandering) only to then chop off the heads of the very people that elevate them to power.. just look at this country..
27% of the Nation is on food stamps, and vast portion of that group are farmers and people that worked in small communities that vote Republican that voted Bush... only to watch their lives and their towns shrivel behind Global Corporate (fascist) progress..
it's a battle of Good and Evil.
Wow Phil, I guess that there are no Doctors coming out of Europe or Japan, or Canada... and that those countries don't have any industry, have never invented anything and don't contribute to the over all progress of the planet ? Silly me and here I thought those Europeans were on to something ?
Thanks.

You are correct.....
For referance...
Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.
6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed
to the government's policies or actions.
9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

Robert asks…
can you translate Shakespear roughly into a modern version?
Romeo: no matter, get thee gone
and hire those horses, i'll be with thee straight
well, juliet, i will lie with thee tonight
Let's see for means. O mischief, though art swift
To enter in the thought of desperate men
I do remeber an apothecary
and hereabout' a dwells, which late I noted
in tatter'd weeds, with overwhelming brows
culling of simples;meagre were his looks
sharp misery had worn him to the bones
and in his needy shop a tortoise hung
an alligator stuff'd, and other skins
of ill-sharp'd fishes, and about his shelves
A beggarly account of empty boxes
green earthen pots, bladders, and musty seeds
remnants of packthread, and old cakes of roses
were thinly scatter'd, to make up a show
nothing this penury, to myself i said
and if a man did need a poison now
whose sale is present death in Mantua
here lives a caitiff wretch would sell it him
o this same thought did but forerun my need
and this same needy man must sell it me.

Artie answers:
He had just heard from a guy that Juliet was dead, when she really only faked her own death to be with Romeo. He wants a posion to kill himself with because he cannot live without Juliet. He then goes to get the potion from an apothecary which is equal to a pharmacist today.

Thomas asks…
Art gallery/ community websites? (i.e. deviantART, Elfwood, etc.)?
NOTE: If this is too long to read please skip everything past the +'s.
I am having trouble finding a good website to publish my drawings on. So far I am part of Elfwood, DeviantART, and a few others that I rarely visit. What do you think is a good art community?
+++++++++
The problem with DeviantART: The GOOD artists there buy expensive computer programs to edit their images to make them look spectacular. These photoshopped images make most graphite images look rather poorly done in comparison. I prefer to work with graphite and I am not spending hundreds of dollars on a program!
The problem with Elfwood: It is focused a little too strictly on fantasy art even though that's it's main theme. Also, it is not organized in the best way. The main thing though, is that about half (not all!) of the artists there are rather....well....CRAPPY!
The kind of site I want: A "mid-range" site. Artist that aren't equivelent to modern Van Goghs or kindergardeners, but somewhere inbetween

Joseph asks…
Why Do Modern Women Take Pleasure From Abusing Men?
Anti Male Bias:
Here is a popular video by a female artist:
Here are some comments made by people who seem to be women on youtube:
">: ] i didnt do this to mah ex-man wen he cheated on me, i got him all hot and hard for me on a dinner date and got him naked in my car, then pushed him out with nothing but a condom on, lol? i dont know how he got home, but he did and he acted like i was the one who had done something wrong"
and
"pandabearlover13 Go for it!!!:) I really want to do this to a guy? after he cheats on me!!!!!:) "
> Note how this girl is fantasizing about it, she seems to desire it, it probably didn't even happen to her.
and
"me and my boyfriend were wacthing CMT and saw? that song. and he looked up out of no were and just said don't worry i won't cheat on you. should i be worryed OR WHAT. and by the way who the FUCK would cheat on carrie underwood. SHE'S SO HOT!"
>A clear view of a woman that thinks negatively about men, and glorifies women.
Why this anti-male bias?
Why such hatred against men?
Us men throughout history have devoted much art, architecture, literature, etc. towards women and our desire towards them.
Modern women on the other hand sing tales of hatred and disgust of men, they despise men, they glorify themselves and put men down.
According to the man speaking in the first video link, this video was the first video made by a woman to win video of the year.
Are you proud of your accomplishments modern women?
Why do men seriously put up with this?
ALSO!
Before you blame men.
Why don't you look at the studies which say that WOMEN cheat more than men in Western countries.

Artie answers:
It's not really my thing, but he was pretty insistent. Anyway he explained that he enjoyed it, and claimed that it was common for men to enjoy a little beating and humiliation, and we took a class from his former dominatrix (can you believe men actually pay to be abused?) that taught me how to abuse him safely, without actually doing him permanent damage, and now it's kinda okay. Sometimes it's fun, but I don't like seeing him cry...So I make him do it outside. (which he actually appreciates.)
I don't get it, but It's consensual, and not really hurting either of us much, and he shows his appreciation for my efforts in ways that I enjoy, so why not?
Jackie: 1. The GOP just put on the table, a bill that would redefine rape to disclude rape after drugging, rape by threat (think gun to head), and rape by coercion (think, holding her kids hostage until she gives him sex). That's right, a bill that has a chance at passing because it takes abortion access away from virtually everybody, will also define most rapes, as consensual sex. So the idea that we have equal rights to men is ridiculous. This law would be unconstitutional if it singled out male rape victims instead of singling out female rape victims. But as the ultra conservative Supreme Court Justice Scalia admitted recently, the constitution does not protect women, as it was written to apply to men.
2. It's pretty clear that you are not a woman.

George asks…
I want to go to college for art, but I don't want it to be an only art college?
Okay, so I'm a junior in high school and I'm looking for a good college to get into. Right now the thing I'm most interested in is Illustration, but I'm thinking I will remain undecided until I know what I want. I'm planning to major in something I like (or hopefully love) that will get me money and minor in something I love.
The problem is, my dad is a bit strict with the guidelines on which colleges I can apply to. It can't be a liberal arts college and it can't be outside of New York state. I'm hoping to sway him on the latter, but the first stands. I'm searching for a college that just has a very good art program. So far I have Hartford, and possibly Rhode Island School of Design. Also community college is not an option.
But to make this worse, I'm not sure if my grades are good enough. During my first two years of high school I suffered from ADD, anemia and a severe sleeping disorder, and my grades reflected this. So as of now my GPA is about a 3.1. I'm hoping it will raise quite a bit this year, because I am gaining control of my problems and working very hard, but I'm just not sure if it will still be good enough. As for my art itself, I recently went to a portfolio reviewing and they said I have the "skills" and while it was a critique I got a lot of positive review and I know what to do to make my portfolio perfect, I'm just not sure about the grade issue.
On a side note, I'm pretty sure I'm very well rounded. I'm in advanced placement US History, advanced placement English, I play the cello, and I dance jazz and modern, possibly contemporary next year. Oh, and I played tennis on the school team for a year. I'm also in Japanese 3 as a foreign language.
Any help? Please and thank you!
Please answer this, it's really really important!

Artie answers:
Tisch is definitely your golden standard. It's one of the best art schools in the country and it's imbedded in NYU, which is a fantastic all-around university. And it's in New York. If you get into Tisch, you can take classes at NYU. But if you go to just NYU, you can't really take classes at Tisch, so make sure you apply to Tisch.
If you can get out of New York, look into Washington University in St. Louis. It also has a great art school imbedded into the university. I'm in the same situation with wanting to study art but not going to a pure art school, and Tisch and WashU are my top two (and only) choices.
Those schools are both really hard to get into. Average GPAs (weighted) are between 4 and 5 and average SAT scores (out of 2400) are well past 2000. If you want an easier one, look into Temple (in Philadelphia, close to New York) and it has lots of arts and specific art majors, unlike most schools which only let you major it "Art" and don't give you depth in anything specific, like Illustration.
Also check these out:
Columbia University (NYC)
Vanderbilt University
Skidmore College (a liberal arts school but I think you might like it)
Rochester Institute of Technology
Northeastern University
Fairleigh Dickinson University (much easier to get into and still has great art)
Elon University (much easier to get into and still has great art)
Duke University
Case Western Reserve University (I don't know too much about it though so maybe disregard it)
Make sure you tell the colleges about the ADD, Anemia, and sleeping disorder so that they know why your grades weren't great earlier.
Also I'm not an expert so this is not a comprehensive list.
Also, your dad sucks. You should let him know that he's really preventing you from finding happiness by narrowing your options. It shouldn't be about what he wants, it should be about what you want.
Also, RISD is a pure art school. It's the best in the country. If you're interested in pure art schools, there's a much wider selection.
