Your Questions About African Artifacts

Thomas asks…
Any Zulu Stores around here?!?!!?
Are their any African (zulu in paticular) stores around calabasas? I really need to get some bracelets (or any other jewelry) and artifacts for a report that i have to do about the zulu culture. Or anything people use during ramadan.

Artie answers:
Your best bet is to go online. Buy from the makers themselves through charities. Zulus do not celebrate ramadan as they are not traditionally muslim...

I was in East Africa in 1999 for an important project and it was amazingly beautiful! I wish more Blacks would go!
While I was there I learned about the native Ethiopic and Amharic language and culture! I was astounded by the intelligence of the Native African people. They behaved very elegant and humble! I can't believe how America makes Africa look! Africa is nothing like they portray in the media! I was very impressed!....More people should go so that they won't be fooled by the white media!

Artie answers:
You make a very interesting point about how Africa is portrayed in the media here in the US. All we see are the negative images about poverty and disease and famine! There is so much beauty and rich culture in Africa that's ALWAYS overlooked! Many people in the United States (including fellow black people) still don't even realize that there are extremely varying facial features, skin tones, hair textures etc. In varying African regions! All because of the visual images we're shown. That's why it's so important to research your history! I agree that all black people (and non-blacks, for that matter) should explore and witness the beauty of the motherland! There's so much to learn that we were deprived of when our people were forced into slavery. There's so much that we don't know about our own history. I too am proud of my heritage, but more importantly, I'm thankful that God made me in his own image! Keep passin' on the knowledge!

Laura asks…
Were the egyptians black white ect.?
Okay Someone answered this and this is what she said:
"First of all Africa is Continent not a country. Africa en-bodies over 50 countries and you can literally fit 3 United States in the Continent of Africa. So I wish people would stop referring to the Continent and it array of different people from different countries as if it was such a small land and a country. Not all "Africans" look alike nor should they. But to answer the question, Egypt over billions of years was inhabited by many different tribes from neighboring countries because it was an ideal land since the Nile River flowes through it and for many other reasons. In the era in which Egypt was a great kingdom and were most of the drawings and artifacts come from the people were call mulattoes (this is the origin of this word) meaning mixed bread. The people were a completely mixed breed race of Black Africans and Arabic people."
Its true. think of Africa as the united continent before the united states was born, EVERYONE in it was Africans of all colors but they didn't think differently of each other. the whole problem of rather or not Egyptians were black or white was a thought born out of racism. and rather they be light skin Africans or dark skinned Africans, Either way you slice it, either way you try to claim the history it is still apart of african history-and Africa was a country of multi-colored people(I wouldn't say multi-raced because they all considered them selves africans.) Some had light skin some had dark, some had slanted eyes, some had wide. I just wish that people wouldn't be so closed minded about the countrie(s) of Africa. And even for african americans, they shouldn't be so closed minded about their own history(light skinned African Americans and dark skinned)- and also the Arab people.

Artie answers:
I will tell you the absolute truth regarding the question about what was the race of the ancient Egyptians. The ancient Egyptians were a people classified as "Berber" people. They are the aboriginal Caucasian people of North Africa. By Caucasian, I don't mean White as in the sense of European, and by Caucasian I don't mean Arab in the sense of Semitic. They are their own people. Today, alot of them have been killed when Arabs invaded North Africa or lost their Berber identity when they were forced to convert to Islam which required them to adopt Arabic culture. You can still find some Berber people in Egypt, they comprise the vast majority of the Coptic Church of Egypt, and today, instead of calling themselves Berber, they identify as the Coptic peoples, as they tend to be heavily religious. Africa is not all "Black" people. Almost 300 million of Africa's 800 million people are Caucasian, mostly Arab Caucasian, while the rest are "Black." Saying Egypt was a black civilization because it was on the continent of Africa is like saying China's civilization is White because it is on the continent of Eurasia. Look at the ancient mummies of Egypt, a massive number of them have red hair, a characteristic that is common of Berber people.
Plus, the origin of the word "mulatto" did NOT come from Egypt. It came around the time of the Moorish invasion of Spain when Arab people referred to the children of mixed Arab and White heritage as muwállad. The word was adopted by the Spanish and became "mulatto." The first time it ever referred to a Black/White mixed person was in Latin America during colonization. It was then later adopted by the Anglo language.
Also, Egyptians thought themselves as an entire different race. They never considered themselves as "African" as the continent of "Africa" didn't exist until British explorers decided what the boundaries of "Africa" should be. The countries above the Sub-Sahara desert never linked themselves to the countries below the Sub-Sahara before the British forced them to. The Egyptians hated the people from Nubia (the Nubians are your stereotypical "black" people) waging war against them on many occasions. The Egyptians depicted the Nubians as black-skinned in their artifacts about them. The Egyptians even highlighted the Nubians’ kinky hair, wide nose and projecting jaw, since the Egyptians didn't have those features and Egyptians highlighted characteristics in the people they considered the "other."
Your friend is correct in the fact that different people from neighboring countries went to Egypt because it was in an ideal location. In fact, the first King of Egypt was an Arabic man who had immigrated to Egypt and united Northern and Southern Egypt. The Jews, Greeks, etc would also go there often to do trade.
Concerning Egypt and their skin color, Egyptian men used red paint to depict themselves, and used yellow paint to depict Egyptian women. They used white paint to depict Greeks and Jews. They used black paint to depict "Black" people. What is interesting is that they also used red paint for Arab men and yellow paint for Arab women, which pretty much indicts that Arabs had the same skin tone as them.
So in conclusion, the Egyptians were NEITHER black or white. They were the Berber people today known as the Coptic people of Egypt. The Berber people have gone through continuous genocide throughout their history and even face considerable hardships today, please respect their heritage and allow them to have Egypt which is rightfully theirs.
Finally, African Americans came from South Western Africa. They do not have anything to do with Eastern Africa. Saying that they do is like saying that Chinese people should take pride in Russia since they share the same land mass, when China doesn’t really have nothing to do with Russia’s culture or heritage. African Americans have enough to be proud of then trying to identify with cultures that are distant and have no link to them besides it residing on the social-political boundaries of “Africa.”

Ken asks…
Why is it so hard us for native americans to keep our own culture?
I wish i could keep up with the native community, i go on sites like Indian Country Today and see articles about "freed men", which are really just black people who think they will get special privileges for being native, i know this because if you hear a "freed man" talking about cherokee's they ALL WAYS mention rights, like one guy said " The cherokee community has pushed us(black people) out of our own culture, as our generation passes our children will not know of their history and rights", there's the smoking gun right there, 'RIGHTS', what does he mean by this? He along with many other african americans expect tribes to give them monthly checks, yet what they don't know is that they are harassing our peoples, if they truly were native americans they wouldn't be fighting for tribal citizenship in the first place. Another thing is that white people are attacking the casinos, many many casinos help out their tribes, yet they don't help out the state, which angers the white senators and governors and now the government is attacking reservations. And the worst thing yet is archeology, while i respect their interests in our history i can't stand it when they withhold native american artifacts, tools, weapons, and dead bodies, i would like it if the archeologists would stop selling every piece of native american history to the smithsonian, to be gawked at by tourists or sold to privet collectors while the ancestors of the people who created those artifacts get to watch their history being stripped by them, and i'm sure many natives would like to become archeologists, poverty levels prevent them from going to college, so they have to hope the tribe can find artifacts before the white, asian and black archeologists steal them.
So between blacks claiming native ancestry for profit , white and asian archeologists not returning native artifacts and our own government trying to steal our lively hood, we seem to be getting stripped from our culture little by little, until the native people become faint memories. Or we can fight back and take a stand, get jobs in the media and in politics, become archeologists, directors, video game designers and even lawyers, we have to become the very people who wrong us, if more natives become archeologists, they can make sure native artifacts and the remains of dead native americans are kept safe, if more natives become lawyers and judges we can stop whites and blacks from harassing us, and if we make video games and movies WE can be the mainstream media, we have to be the leaders of america by becoming presidents, journalists and congress. If we ARE the media and the government we can make america land of the natives, instead of that place the injuns use to live in.

Artie answers:
I agree with some of what you say....concerning the Freedmen issue and the archaeology issue. My own Band is sponsoring students from ANY Canadian Band to become archaeologists, so our histories cannot be contaminated or twisted into things they aren't......You are wrong on the Casino issue though......Casinos pay out a ridiculous amount of state taxes......more money then the tribe sees.
There also is a large aboriginal movement in the media. There are many Native owned production companies, and we are seeing more movies made by Natives, starring real Natives. Do you get the APTN network in the US? If not, their programs are available online.......There are quite a few tv shows, that feature a Native majority cast. Its a good thing to see, when you can't related to most of the crap they put on tv. I think media is an important step, as it will help to stop the prejudices, stereotypes and preconceived notions already in place about us.
*LOL at the myth-toter who actually believes there are monthly cheques just for being Native, and that we all receive tuition waivers for college. How completely ignorant.
