In traditional South African art, the artist barely added their name or signature to a finished piece. While some individuals made pieces for a leader or royalty, most design was created by groups of artists who finished work according to the custom of their folks. Still, many individual marks and methodologies can be found throughout South African art. Design also had great importance to traditional Africans and served many purposes, including praising kings and for spiritual purposes.

African folks art is formed to illustrate ceremonies, customs, politics and spirituality among African clans and people. It has been made in towns throughout the continent by folk with no artistic training in any way. Despite primitive settings, artists have created complex and classy South African art for generations.
